Second arrest made in connection with Sept. 7 DSU shooting – WGMD


UPDATED – 09/22/24 – Two Dover men were arrested in a shooting at Delaware State University on September 7th. DSU police were called to the Courtyards Apartments around 10:30 p.m. and found several vehicles and buildings damaged by gunfire – no one was injured in this incident. The investigation led to detectives identifying 18-year-old Tyrone Harrell and a 15-year-old boy – both of Dover – in connection with the shooting.

Harrell was enrolled as a student at DSU and has since been expelled. The 15-year-old has no known connection to DSU.

Harrell was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with various crimes:

  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime (felony) – 3 counts
  • Conspiracy 2nd degree (serious crime)
  • First Degree Reckless Endangerment (Felony) – 3 counts
  • Possession of a firearm in a safe school zone
  • Damage to property – 3 charges

Harrell is being held at SCI on $200,000 bail.

On Friday, September 20, U.S. Marshals, Dover Police and the Delaware Department of Probation located the 15-year-old on White Oak Road, where he was arrested. Police followed the teen's path and found a Polymer .80 pistol – a ghost gun – loaded with a 30-round magazine. He is accused of the following offenses:

  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime (felony) – 3 counts
  • Conspiracy 2nd degree (serious crime)
  • First Degree Reckless Endangerment (Felony) – 3 counts
  • Possession of a firearm in a safe school zone (felony)
  • Possession of a firearm by a person prohibited (felony) – 2 counts
  • Damage to property – 3 charges

He is being held at Stevenson House on $226,150 bail.

ORIGINAL STORY – 09/14/24 – Delaware State University Police have arrested a suspect involved in a shooting incident last Saturday evening (Sept. 7) in the Courtyards, the university's off-campus apartments. Police were able to identify those involved through timely investigation and surveillance cameras on the Dover campus.

University President Tony Allen said in a letter to the student body sent to Talk of Delmarva that a student at the university had been arrested and expelled for the shooting and that a second suspect would soon be brought to justice.

Allen says no one was injured in the shooting – and the investigation is ongoing.
