Minisink Valley High School student killed in early morning accident

BLOOMINGBURG – A Minisink Valley High School student was killed and three others injured when the car they were traveling in went off the exit ramp at Exit 114 on Route 17 in Bloomingburg early Sunday and went down a steep hill.

The victim was 17 years old, said Steven Neuhaus, Orange County executive.

Details of the crash were not immediately available, but Neuhaus said the county's mental health disaster team was on hand to assist.

School Superintendent Brian Monahan said, “It is important that members of our school community – especially our high school community – have the opportunity to talk about their feelings and reactions.”

He said parents should encourage their children to talk about their feelings while listening to them and observing their behavior.

Neuhaus said parents, students and teachers should know that 311 is available for non-urgent help.

For additional support, students can also contact text4teens (845-391-1000).

Monahan said out of respect for the incident, all Homecoming activities planned for this week, including Spirit Week, the Pep Rally and the Homecoming Dance, will be postponed.

The football match for this Friday is still planned at this time.
