Murder and suicide suspected cause of closure of I-5 North in Everett, WA

EVERETT, Washington. – On Sunday afternoon, drivers were forced to make a U-turn on Interstate 5 near 77th Street when police in the Everett area abruptly closed all northbound lanes.

Police now confirm that two men are dead and a woman is in hospital with gunshot wounds. Investigators described a crime scene that followed a murder-suicide on Sept. 22 on West Casino Road.

Witnesses to the shooting gave officers a description of the shooter's car. They say their officers then began a pursuit. The impending closure would soon lead to traffic jams of more than five kilometers.

Police tracked down the suspect. They say they heard gunshots when the suspect crashed on I-5. According to Everett police, he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police officials say partial closures of I-5 will remain in place as they continue their investigation Sunday evening. They are urging motorists heading north to seek alternate routes and expect delays.

WSDOT advises riders to expect additional delays as this closure adds to already busy travel days due to events and other closures in the area.
