One minor dead, another in custody after shooting during family dispute

DUCHESNE COUNTY, Utah — One boy is dead and another is in police custody after a shooting in Duchesne County. Police believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between family members.

The Duchesne County Sheriff's Office said it was called to the scene of a “family dispute” in which at least one shot was fired.

When officers arrived, they found a young man outside and another boy dead inside. The victim appeared to have a gunshot wound to the upper body, officers said.

The sheriff's office said no other family members were in the house at the time of the shooting. The relationship between the two boys was not immediately disclosed.

Detectives are currently investigating what led to the fatal shooting. The juvenile suspect was taken into custody for questioning and then transported to a juvenile detention center in Vernal.

Officials said that due to the “sensitive nature of the incident,” no names or further details would be released at this time, but confirmed that the case was being investigated as a homicide.
