NFL fines Chiefs and Peyton Hendershot for sideline incident with Ravens linebacker

The NFL fined the Chiefs $100,000 and tight end Peyton Hendershot $5,472 for a shoving incident on the sideline during the fourth quarter of the opening game win over the Baltimore Ravens on September 5.

Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith made contact with Patrick Mahomes and appeared to push him to the ground after he ran out of bounds on a play early in the fourth quarter. Hendershot, who was inactive and out of uniform the entire game, came to Mahomes' aid and shoved Smith.

No flags were thrown. After the game, Smith accused Mahomes of failing on the play and took a shot at Hendershot, who joined the Chiefs last month via a trade from the Dallas Cowboys.

Ravens' Roquan Smith was not penalized for this play involving Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“Whoever 88 (Hendershot) is, I don't know who he is, but he better watch out for himself,” Smith said. “He made a little, clever jab. I'll see him when I see him.”

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com, the NFL sent a reminder to teams in a preseason memo prohibiting non-participating players from “making unnecessary physical contact with, taunting, or using profanity, threats, or abusive language or gestures toward opponents, game officials, or league officials.”

Pelissero reported that Hendershot plans to appeal the fine.

Smith was one of two Ravens who received fines for other incidents in the game.

Smith was fined $16,883 for a horse collar tackle on running back Isiah Pacheco. Smith was penalized for the play.

Outside linebacker Odafe Oweh was fined $20,050 for tackling Pacheco in the fourth quarter, apparently striking the Chiefs' running back on his side with the crown of his helmet. Oweh was not penalized for that play.
