Cat rescued from sewer after almost 2 months

On September 10, a community in Duluth, Minnesota, rallied to rescue a cat missing since July from a sewer. Dahlia Marie Boberg recorded this video showing her neighbor Clifton Nesseth and other members of their community working together to rescue Nesseth's cat, named Drifter. In a Facebook post after the rescue, Nesseth described Drifter's disappearance, the hope for his return, and his seemingly miraculous rescue. Nesseth said Drifter went missing on July 18, the same day a road worker sealed sewers and placed large rocks at a previously open construction site in the neighborhood. Over the next two months, her family put up missing person posters, regularly called for Drifter, and at one point even temporarily adopted a cat that looked like him. Nesseth said his emotions led him to believe it might be their missing pet. Nesseth wrote that on the evening of September 10, they learned that neighborhood children had heard a meow coming from the sewer. With the help of a shovel, scissors and encouragement from neighbors, Nesseth was able to open a hole that a cat could have fit through. He was delighted to discover that it was indeed Drifter. Nesseth said Drifter was a “strong and impressive” 15 pounds when he went missing and was weighed by emergency vets at 6.5 pounds after he was rescued. But he is otherwise “completely himself” and recovering under veterinary care. “The vet said cats need to eat every three days before they start to shut down, so I can't imagine what he's been eating for the past few months to survive. How many horrific ends have the rats and mice met that happened upon his hungry and unstoppable nature? How deep did he have to dig (inward) to survive and eventually return to his natural state as a surface dweller, to the delight of his family and neighborhood, who all gathered to witness his rebirth from the earth,” Nesseth wrote.
