Warren Mott High School cancels classes after impact of Homecoming incident

WARREN, Mich. – Warren Mott High School students will stay home Monday following events at their homecoming dance over the weekend.

During the homecoming dance on Saturday, September 21, students began calling 911 when they heard balloons popping. The high volume of calls resulted in a significant police response. Police found no evidence of an active threat at the school, but the building was evacuated.

On Sunday, a petition began circulating on Change.org demanding that schools remain closed on Monday due to a crisis response to the homecoming dance on Saturday. In response to the petition, someone posted a threat against the school. While police investigate, Warren-Mott schools will remain closed on September 23 – including the cancellation of games, practices and evening events.

“To the students of Warren Mott – as your principal, your physical safety is my top priority. Your mental health is just as important. Please take some time on Monday to rest, reflect, talk to your loved ones about how you are feeling, and be a friend to your classmates. When you return to school on Tuesday, we have adults you can talk to and resources to help you.”

John C. Bernia Jr., superintendent of Warren Consolidated Schools.
