In the hellhole of the Brooklyn prison where Sean “Diddy” Combs is incarcerated

The New York facility where Ghislaine Maxwell was famously held has seen numerous tragedies over the years, with several judges refusing to send people there.

Sean “Diddy” Combs is being held in Brooklyn's notorious federal prison, described as a “hellhole,” while he awaits trial. The 54-year-old rapper was arrested last week on multiple charges including sex trafficking, sexual abuse, violence and organized crime. Combs, who pleaded not guilty, was transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) on Tuesday after a judge denied his request for $50 million bail. His lawyers have since raised concerns about the horrific conditions at the New York jail.

The Brooklyn detention center where Ghislaine Maxwell was held has seen an increasing number of tragic incidents over the years. Several judges have refused to send people there, the Associated Press reported. Since his arrest on sex trafficking charges, Combs has been monitored for suicide risk. In his bail application, his lawyers argued that the MDC is not suitable for pretrial detention due to the immoral conditions. “Just earlier this summer, an inmate was murdered. At least four inmates have committed suicide there in the past three years,” Combs' lawyers wrote Tuesday.

The MDC, which houses about 1,600 inmates, has been plagued by problems since it opened in the 1990s. It is plagued by rat infestations and violent outbursts. Maxwell, who was once Jeffrey Epstein's assistant, famously complained about the disgusting living conditions at the MDC. She complained of sleep deprivation, rodents and the smell of sewage in her cell. In addition to Maxwell, other prominent inmates have been held at the Brooklyn Lock, which has been described as “hell on earth,” including R. Kelly and Sam Bankman-Fried.

In June, 37-year-old Uriel Whyte was stabbed to death at the MDC. A month later, 36-year-old Edwin Cordero died after being seriously injured in a prison brawl. Cordero's lawyer, Andrew Dalack, told the New York Times at the time that his client was merely the victim of an “overcrowded, understaffed and neglected federal prison that is hell on earth.” Although understaffing is known to be a constant problem at the New York City prison, at least six of its staff have been charged with crimes in the past five years.
