Suspect in window smash leads police on chase through two counties

A Giddings man was arrested last week after leading police on a chase through two counties.

According to Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek, officers were dispatched to a residence on Zilss Road around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday to report a man had broken windows.

The suspect left the scene before officers arrived, however an investigator located the suspect's vehicle on FM 448 heading into Lee County. Investigators followed the vehicle and the Lee County Sheriff's Office was notified.

As we entered Lee County, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop, sparking a chase. The Lee County Sheriff's Office and Giddings Police Department joined the pursuit.

Officers were able to nail the tires of the vehicle, causing it to come to a stop in a ditch near railroad tracks south of Giddings. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Michael Sanders, fled the vehicle but was quickly apprehended by officers.

Sanders was taken into custody by state police and charged with evading arrest. The Fayette County Sheriff's Office plans to seek arrest warrants for additional offenses related to the first incident in Fayette County.

“We would like to thank the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Giddings Police Department and Texas DPS for their quick response to this case and great teamwork,” Korenek said.
