Elementary school janitor arrested for carrying loaded gun on school grounds – NBC 6 South Florida

A Broward County Public Schools janitor was arrested after authorities said he knowingly and willfully possessed a firearm on school grounds in May.

According to a police report, 59-year-old Ronnie Turner was arrested after the Broward County School Police Special Investigative Unit (SIU) received an anonymous tip that Turner was known to “carry a handgun on school property.”

The notice, sent in a letter through the USPS, also said he should keep the gun “safe and loaded in his truck most of the time,” the police report said.

The SIU saw Turner arrive for his shift at Village Elementary in Sunrise and confronted him in the principal's office, the report said.

Turner stated that the weapon, a 9 mm Smith & Wesson M&P, was in his car, and the SIU then informed him that possession of a weapon on school property was not only a violation of the school district's safety regulations, but was also a criminal offense, according to the police report.

The report goes on to say that Turner was cooperative in discussions with investigators and stated that he believed it was “okay to carry his firearm and leave it in his vehicle as long as he had a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon.”

Turner appeared remorseful, the report said, and said he was unaware that he had violated any school district policy or state law.

Officers retrieved the gun from the truck's center console and found it was loaded. There were 12 rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber, the police report said.

The firearm was secured and later confiscated at the Sunrise Police Department's evidence unit.

Turner appeared before a bail court judge and was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Bail was set at $1,000.
