Madison police arrest man accused of smashing State Street store windows

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A man caught with a brick in his hand was arrested for allegedly smashing the windows of businesses on State Street, Madison police said Monday.

Madison police said officers found several broken windows on State Street around 3:45 a.m. A sergeant reported that he received a report of a disturbance in the 300 block of State Street, and officers found a 31-year-old man there who reportedly was holding a brick.

Officers took the man into custody on suspicion of criminal damage, evading bail, and second-degree reckless endangerment of safety.

One of the damaged stores was Little Luxuries. Owner Amy Moore said it was heartbreaking to get the call about the damage so early in the morning.

Moore said nothing was stolen, but there was minor damage to merchandise near the broken glass. Aside from the broken windows, the company plans to continue operating as normal on Monday.

“I think we're actually going to stay in business,” Moore said. “We're going to get some fresh air, let the stale air out through the wide open window, but we're trying to stay positive. Yes, we're going to be open today. We're going to get through this.”

The MPD confirmed that six stores were damaged, but officials expect to see more damage when they reopen on Monday.
