VTA employee arrested for murder of colleague in San Jose on Friday

A Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) employee was arrested in San Jose on Sunday in connection with the fatal shooting of a colleague in a VTA parking lot on Friday.

The shooting occurred around 9:40 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the VTA's Chaboya Division Yard on South 7th Street. According to the Bay Area News Group, the San Jose Fire Department received a 911 call, and when emergency responders arrived on the scene, they found a man with at least one gunshot wound.

The victim was not identified, only that he was a VTA employee. On Sunday, a suspect was arrested for the crime, 33-year-old Duc Minh Bui. A motive has not yet been announced.

According to KTVU, Bui was arrested at his San Jose home at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday. A statement from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said Bui was “solely responsible for the victim's death.”

This is another case of workplace violence at VTA, where nine men were killed in a mass shooting by a disgruntled mechanic in May 2021.

As the Bay Area News Group notes, the VTA now employs private security teams at its facilities and continues to face numerous lawsuits from victims' families.

VTA union president Raj Singh of the Amalgamated Transit Union told the news group that employees were “shocked and confused” by the latest shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 408-808-4500 or contact the Sheriff's Office anonymous tip line at 408-808-4431.
