Woman from Plymouth faces criminal charges after ‘critical incident’

Penobscot County Emergency Management received a call reporting a person was experiencing a suspected mental health crisis and in possession of a weapon, and a curfew was issued.

PLYMOUTH, Maine — A Plymouth woman is facing multiple charges in connection with a “critical incident” Friday that During their operation, the police issued an order to seek shelter in the immediate area.

According to an update from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office released Monday, dispatchers at the Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a report around 5:20 p.m. of a possibly suicidal woman who allegedly threatened another person with a firearm.

The person who was allegedly threatened by the woman apparently managed to “gain control of the weapon” and everyone was able to leave the house, the press release said.

However, the woman did not leave the house.

“As the investigation progressed, the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team, the Maine State Police Tactical Team and members of the Penobscot County Criminal Investigation Division arrived to assist,” Monday's press release said.

The sheriff's office issued a curfew on its social media page shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday due to what it called a “critical incident” in the Rutland Road area.

The curfew was lifted after midnight with an arrest and a Yellow Flag Law review after police obtained a search warrant for the residence. The sheriff's office then obtained an expanded search warrant, allowing them to search nearby and eventually find the woman in an RV.

Evelyn Melanson, 66, was taken into custody and faces several criminal charges:

  • Domestic violence caused by threat of a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony
  • Domestic violence, reckless behavior
  • Assaults in the family

Melanson was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, but no bail or surety amounts had been set as of Monday afternoon.
