Fugitive wanted for attempted murder arrested in Kanawha County

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A man wanted by Fairmont police for kidnapping and attempted murder was arrested Monday morning in Kanawha County, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Jamie Ray Jones, 32, of Marion County, was arrested at a home in Kelly's Creek around 8:30 a.m.

Jones was wanted by Fairmont police for kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder

Jones was also wanted in another case for aiding and abetting murder.

Jones was arrested by the CUFFED Task Force of the U.S. Marshals Service, Southern District of West Virginia.

Jones and others are accused of violently abducting a man with a firearm from a Morgantown home on April 27, 2023.

According to the U.S. Marshals, Jones and others detained the man after the kidnapping and threatened to kill him while they searched for his brother in Fairmont. They eventually found the brother near 321 Maple Avenue Extension and began shooting at him from a vehicle, officials reported.

During the exchange, the kidnapping victim escaped from the vehicle.

Arrest warrants for Jones were issued on May 5, 2023.

Jones is also charged with aiding and abetting a man who committed premeditated murder on March 23, 2023.

In this case, authorities said, another man who had committed a murder near 788 Cleveland Avenue contacted Jones and asked for help leaving the area.

Jones ordered the man to head toward Ohio, where he was eventually arrested.

Jones also warned the suspected perpetrator that the police were already at the crime scene.

Arrest warrants for Jones were issued on May 3, 2023.

The U.S. Marshals Mountain State Fugitive Task Force was requested on May 9, 2023, to assist in the search for Jones.

Investigators spent countless hours trying to locate Jones, following leads in at least five states.

On Monday morning, those efforts culminated in a lead in the Southern District of West Virginia and the successful arrest of Jones.

During the arrest, Jones attempted to flee the house, but the arrest team prevented his escape.
