In a statement from league officials, it was initially said: “The Atalanta vs. Como match has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions. A further pitch inspection will be carried out shortly.”

The players of both clubs went onto the pitch to warm up before kick-off.

However, a fan watching the game compared the action to “water polo.”

The referee then inspected the field in front of the two captains by rolling the ball across the field.

The ball had difficulty moving and got stuck in the waterlogged grass, and large puddles formed.

15 minutes later, a second inspection was carried out and the referee decided that the game should continue.

But Atalanta captain Maarten De Roon reportedly described the decision as “madness” as the rain continued.

After further discussion, the referee postponed the game until the next day because the fans in the stadium were sent home.
