Two teenagers arrested after attack on cheerleader

Oak Lawn, Illinois police have taken two juvenile suspects into custody for a “serious incident” involving cheerleaders during a Richards High School football game last weekend between Richards and Oak Lawn Community High School.

During the incident, several Oak Lawn cheerleaders were attacked.

The Oak Lawn school community was made aware of the incident through a Facebook post by Dr. Shahe Bagdasarian, Superintendent of Oak Lawn Community School.

“I am writing to inform you of a serious incident that occurred during our Richards High School football game this weekend,” began Superintendent Bagdasarian's statement. “During halftime, a verbal and physical altercation occurred that was initiated by an individual who is not an OLCHS student. Several of our cheerleaders were unfortunately assaulted.

“Oak Lawn Police and other law enforcement agencies immediately intervened to remove anyone causing conflict. Numerous students and parents were removed from the game. Contrary to some reports on social media, at no point were weapons involved, nor were there any serious injuries.”

No further details were released about the nature of the attack on the cheerleaders, but Oak Lawn police confirmed to WGN 9 News in Illinois that two juveniles were arrested following the incident.

“We hold our students and fans to high standards and take student conduct very seriously, especially at school-sponsored events,” Dr. Bagdasarian added in his statement. “We are actively investigating the incident to identify all OLCHS students involved, and I assure you that we will pursue appropriate consequences in accordance with our school and district policies.”

As discussions arise about this incident, I encourage you to talk to your students about the importance of resolving conflict constructively and understanding the impact their actions have on our community.”
