Doug Pederson of the Jacksonville Jaguars evaluates Trevor Lawrence

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson spent seven seasons as an NFL quarterback, much of which filling in for Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. He was surrounded by talented players and talented quarterback minds.

With 82 games and 17 starts under his belt, Pederson may know a thing or two about quarterbacks, and that knowledge certainly didn't hurt when he helped the Nick Foles-led Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots in 2018.

That knowledge should come in handy as he tries to pull his Jaguars out of an 0-2 hole that could quickly turn to 0-4 in just two weeks. A key to success will be his franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence, like the team itself, has struggled in the first two weeks. So what is Pederson's diagnosis at quarterback?

“I guess when you evaluate Trevor — and I know the quarterback position is very scrutinized, I think — but there are some issues, just assignment errors that obviously need to be addressed,” he told reporters Thursday. “I think he's done a good job. Can he be better? Yes, he can be better. I think that's all part of continuing to grow. I think also you can see that we've had more backup drives in two games than we've had in two years. So our starting position has been difficult, so there are some challenges there as well.

“We're facing some specific situations there, but I think he's on the right track. He's doing some really good things. I think in the game the other day, we just didn't have enough chances in the first half. He made some really good throws down the field to Brian. [Thomas Jr.]and we kept driving the ball down the field. I also think he did a good job when he doesn't have the ball there, either running or finding the defender. So we just have to keep working.”

It's a head coach's job to figure out what works and what doesn't to put his team and quarterback in the best position possible to win, and it will be imperative that Pederson figures that out quickly.
