Man and woman are said to have left the scene of a shooting with children

JONESBORO, Arkansas (KAIT) – Police have arrested a Jonesboro man and woman accused of fleeing the scene after one of them fired shots into a crowd.

Craighead County District Judge David Boling found on Monday, September 23, that there was probable cause to charge 20-year-old Casyuna Newbern with attempted felony murder, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree.

Judge Boling also found there was probable cause to charge 26-year-old Christopher Wayne Kinnon with first-degree terroristic threatening/threatening great bodily harm or death, evading arrest, second-degree assault on a family or household member/threat of bodily harm, and resisting arrest – refusing to submit to arrest/active or passive refusal to arrest.

According to Newbern's affidavit, officers responded to an Alpine Street address at approximately 6:06 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, because shots had been fired.

“An impartial witness stated that Ms. Newbern and her boyfriend arrived at the scene in an aggressive manner and began to aggressively assault the victims,” police said. “This resulted in a physical altercation involving five individuals.”

After the fight, Newbern pulled a gun from her vehicle and fired three shots into the crowd.

A witness said a victim attempted to disarm Newbern, but she and her boyfriend then fled the scene with the weapon.

Police stated that they later discovered that the intended target of the incident “was the victim, who had a child with Ms. Newbern's boyfriend,” and that he was present when the shooting occurred.

According to Kinnon's affidavit, officers were told on the way to the scene that the suspect vehicle was a blue Malibu. One of them saw it leaving the area and conducted a traffic stop. Newbern and Kinnon were inside the vehicle.

“During the arrest, Mr. Kinnon resisted arrest and fled on foot back to the scene,” the affidavit states. “He was arrested but continued to resist arrest while handcuffed.”

According to police, Kinnon complained of an injury and was taken to the hospital.

The affidavit states that while escorting five victims to the ambulance, Kinnon threatened them, saying, “I'm going to kill you all one by one.”

Further investigation revealed that during the fight, Kinnon pushed a woman against a vehicle, causing pain in her right leg. This was confirmed when police noticed the victim limping while speaking to them.

In her affidavit, Newbern admitted during an interrogation about her rights to firing a handgun during a fight involving eight victims, including two children under the age of five.

Both Newbern and Kinnon are being held at the Craighead County Detention Center.

Judge Boling sentenced Newbern to $150,000 bail and Kinnon to $50,000 bail. If they post bail, the judge said they will have to wear an ankle monitor with a GPS receiver.

Arraignment of Newbern and Kinnon is scheduled for Monday, October 28.
