Jaime Munguia's possible fight with the boxer who caused “problems” for David Benavidez excites fans

The Canelo Alvarez Loss does not hold back Jaime MunguiaThe Tijuana native is coming off an impressive 10th round KO victory against a previously undefeated Erik Bazinyan of Armenia. Now the 27-year-old has reportedly taken on another opponent, which will be his 4th fight this year.

Munguia started the year 2024 with a duel against John Ryder in January, earning him a huge payday against Alvarez. Although he beat Ryder spectacularly by 9th round knockout, he was unable to repeat the result against his Mexican opponent in May. However, he quickly rebounded by facing Bazinyan in September. So the question is: who's next?

According to a report by ESPN's Salvador Rodriguez, Munguia has his sights set on the former super middleweight title challenger Ronald Gavril of Romania. It is speculated that the possible fight will take place on December 14th on Munguia's home turf at Caliente Stadium in Tijuana. Until his fight with Alvarez, Jaime Munguia fought under the banner of Golden Boy Promotions, led by Oscar De La HoyaHowever, it seems like he has switched sides as his fight against Bazinyan was under Top Rank. Robert Arumthe chairman of Top Rank, even mentioned in an interview with Boxing Scene that they are planning a number of fights for Munguia in the future.

These fights are reportedly set to take place in Mexico, with Munguia taking center stage at the events. Regardless, his possible upcoming fight could cap off the year in an exciting way. It is worth noting that Gavril, his likely opponent, will face David Benavidez in 2017, where he managed to defeat the “Mexican Monster” before ultimately losing by split decision.

They finally faced each other in the ring again the following year for the same WBC super middleweight title, but Benavidez secured a unanimous decision victory. With this potential fight in mind, fans were quick to share their thoughts in the comments.

Fans celebrate Munguia’s activity

While some fighters may have taken their first career loss too seriously and stopped fighting for a while, Munguia's increased activity seems to have impressed fans. One user highlighted Benavidez's performance against Gavril. The user wrote: “Benavidez had problems with this guy.” Although Benavidez had some problems in 2017, it is worth noting that it was his first title fight and the knockdown came in the 12th round.

Another user praised Jaime Munguia for his activity. The user wrote: “Oh, okay, Munguia stays active, I like that.” In fact, this is a drastic change in Munguia's activity over the years – in 2022 he fought three times, and in 2023 the activity dropped sharply with only a single fight.

While some users viewed Gavril's knockdown of Benavidez as a plus, this user disagreed. “That's cool, but why Gavril? He lost to Benavidez twice.” the user commented. And to top it all off, Gavril is now 38 and about to retire.

The next user seemed happy with the potential pairing, but shared his expectations for Munguia. “I love the activity, hopefully we can get the fight with Christian Mbilli soon,” the user noted. Christian Mbilli from Cameroon is currently undefeated and is quickly rising up the super middleweight rankings.

This user, meanwhile, didn't seem happy at all about the potential fight. The user commented: “This man is still fighting nobodies.” Munguia has often been criticized for the lack of big names on his resume.

However, Jaime Munguia is certainly not going to retire because of his one loss. Although fans are not too negative about his choice of opponent, the question remains who will be Munguia's next big opponent.
