Shortly after the start of the academic year, Curry Public Safety had to respond to an incident in the freshman dorm on the north side of campus. In the early morning hours of Aug. 28, “unknown” individuals entered the North Campus Residence Hall (NCRH), knocking on doors and damaging property, according to a statement from the college.

This incident occurred only during the second week of classes, when students were still adjusting. By this time, many students are already gripped by a range of emotions as they find themselves in a new environment and making the transition to college or returning to everyday life.

Erik Müürisepp, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, sent an email later in the day discussing the incident and what the community was doing to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“A group of unknown individuals entered the campus through a fence on the north corner of campus and entered the North Campus dormitory, where they knocked on several room doors, damaged a sign, and set off the fire alarm,” the email said. “They then left campus.”

Due to the alarms triggered, first responders were notified, including the Milton police and fire department, who arrived at the scene.

Müürisepp added: “The campus has extensive video surveillance and these videos are reviewed by law enforcement.”

Public Safety Director Paul King said The Currier Times that the incident has led to new security measures.

“We have taken additional measures to ensure this does not happen again,” King said. “We have put up additional fencing and trimmed the brush so that the cameras have a better view of the campus.”

Thanks to the additional features, King is confident that such incidents will not happen again, and there has not been a repeat.

Students who hear this news are sure to be a little shocked. Andrew Daponte, a business student in the class of 2026, said it was a surprise.

“Even though I wasn't living at the NCRH at the time, it was a little disturbing to hear that it happened, but everything seems to be OK now,” Daponte said. “I feel pretty safe here, this seems to be a random incident, but other than that it's relatively safe and quiet.”

The email, which the school sent to students and faculty, said there will be a greater public safety presence on campus and that Milton police will patrol the campus during the day and station an officer there at night.

The school also added: “We encourage all students, faculty and staff to report any information… to public safety. We remind all students and community members to keep cars and valuables locked and to avoid leaving dorm doors open or allowing access to unknown individuals.”

Shannon Muldoon, a psychology student in the class of 2025, said she was happy to see law enforcement involved.

“I was very concerned and worried about everyone's safety,” Muldoon said. “I was afraid something like this could happen again.”

Muldoon added: “I feel safer knowing that the Milton police are here if another incident occurs.”

Although this incident occurred several weeks ago, the school is still actively investigating with the Milton Police Department. Boston Police are also working to identify some suspects, but there is no further news.
