A University of Southern California student was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly hitting one of her professors in the head with a metal water bottle on Monday.

According to campus security officials, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. in the back of a lecture hall in Dauterive Hall.

They say the student hit the unidentified professor “on the side of the head with a fairly large metal water bottle.”

Both the school's Office of Public Safety and the Los Angeles Fire Department were called to the scene to assist with the incident.

The student, whose identity is still unknown, was located in an adjacent building and taken into custody for assault with a deadly weapon, while the professor was taken to a local hospital for further treatment.

Her condition was not immediately known.

The circumstances leading up to the attack are still unclear and investigators are working to determine a motive. Campus security officials say other students were present and witnessed the attack.

No further information was provided.
