Covenant mother supports lawmakers in fight against gun violence in Washington

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Covenant mother joined Democrats on a House oversight committee Monday for a roundtable discussion on the long-term effects of gun violence on students.

Melissa Alexander, the mother of a survivor of the Covenant School shooting, worked with school administrators, political representatives and legal experts to find solutions to prevent gun violence.

The meeting was hosted by Democrats on the Oversight and Accountability Committee. They wanted Americans to talk about the real facts of everyday school life. They said that this includes the fact that students are forced to attend a school where they have to fear for their lives.

The committee said the panel was a result of Republicans' “inaction” following the recent school massacre in Winder, Georgia.

Alexander has been active in the Tennessee state legislature since her nine-year-old son survived the Covenant School shooting.

During Monday's panel, she spoke about the experiences of her son Ozzy, who survived the shooting. She also spoke about the daily lives of survivors after the trauma and the need for change in gun laws.

“As a gun owner and a Republican, I have spent the last year and a half working with colleagues from both camps on the need for changes to our gun laws,” Alexander said. “This is not a partisan issue.”
