Hadera resident arrested in connection with assassination attempt on intelligence target – Crime in Israel

Two residents of Hadera were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attempted assassination of a high-ranking intelligence agent living in the city, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

The two suspects were known to police for other crimes. Police extended the detention period of one of the suspects, a 31-year-old man, by five days, and the second suspect, a 29-year-old man, was brought to court on Monday morning.

So far, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack. The police expect more arrests.

The three other suspects, Netanya residents in their 30s, were arrested on Friday shortly before they were about to carry out the attempted murder. The three were seen in a stolen vehicle, wearing masks and gloves, which prompted police to launch an initial investigation. The vehicle also contained handguns and ammunition.

The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. when police officers caught the hit squad lying in wait for the victim – a high-ranking criminal in his 30s with whom they were in dispute. The victim was staying at a hotel on the beach in Hadera, and the squad, knowing he was at the hotel, was waiting for him in a black jeep in the hotel's parking lot.

Previous assassination attempt

Several days before the attempt, police intelligence officers warned the senior intelligence officer about the serious intention of criminal elements to harm him.

In July, unknown assailants fired at the same intelligence target near his house while he was staying there with some of his companions. He was not injured in the incident, but some of his companions sustained minor injuries.

Two loaded handguns were found on the three suspects, who live in Netanya, are well known to the police and have already served prison sentences. They were taken for questioning and subsequently detained. Depending on the needs of the investigation, the police may request an extension of their detention at the Haifa District Court.

The high-value intelligence target is a resident of Hadera and is classified as a high-value target. He has already served prison sentences for weapons offenses and serious violence.
