Walton police arrested a Plainfield man on drug charges following a traffic stop Monday morning, according to a press release from City Marshal Tom Heflin.

On September 23 at approximately 2:35 a.m., Deputy Marshal Matt Heflin of the Walton Police Department stopped a 2019 Ford F-250 on State Road 18 near County Road 500 East in Cass County. He identified the driver as 56-year-old Will Reeves.

During the traffic stop, Deputy Marshal Heflin noticed behaviors and signs of possible drug use and requested canine assistance. Deputy Bryce Hamilton of the Cass County Sheriff's Department arrived with his canine partner Mato, who alerted the deputies to the presence of narcotics in the Ford.

A search of the Ford uncovered a powdered substance identified as kratom, a Schedule I controlled substance, with the suspected kratom weighing approximately 435 grams. A loaded handgun, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were also found in the vehicle, according to the release.

Reeves was arrested and booked into the Cass County Jail on charges of Trafficking in a Schedule I Controlled Substance Over 28 Grams, a Level 2 Felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class A Misdemeanor, Possession of Marijuana, a Previous Conviction, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Possession of Paraphernalia, a Class C Misdemeanor.

Substances found during the incident will be sent to the Indiana State Police lab to determine the exact substance and weight, the release said. Deputy Marshal Heflin was assisted by the Cass County Sheriff's Department and Johnson's Towing and Recovery. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
