Mac Jones debuts with new team, 1st pass ends in disaster

Mac Jones made his first regular season appearance for the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night.

Things didn't go well.

The former New England Patriots quarterback entered the game in the closing minutes of the Jaguars' devastating loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

After trailing 40-10 in the fourth quarter, Jacksonville pulled Trevor Lawrence from the field and handed the keys to the offense to Jones in garbage time.

After giving the ball away twice, Jones dropped back to pass on his third play and was sacked by rookie pass rusher Javon Solomon, who the Bills recovered. You can watch the play here.

Jones came back on the Jaguars' ensuing drive, which went quite well. Jones completed his first two actual pass attempts and totaled 14 yards to move the chains.

Thanks to some solid running plays, Jacksonville got within striking distance later in the drive. Jones almost did it in the final minute with a touchdown pass on fourth down. The pass was spot on, but receiver Parker Washington couldn't catch the ball in the end zone.

The end result: Jones completed 5 of 8 passes for 22 yards, with his longest pass going nine yards. That's a meager 2.8 yards per pass attempt. (For comparison, Jacoby Brissett averaged 5.4 yards per attempt in the Patriots' loss to the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.)

With the Jaguars already falling apart, Jones was thrust into a difficult situation on Monday night. It was a far cry from the preseason, when Jones excelled en route to becoming Jacksonville's second quarterback.
