King Charles surprises royal fan on her 87th birthday

King Charles surprised his royal supporter Alice Ryce last week when she celebrated her 87th birthday in the grounds of Dumfries House.

In a clip shared on the monarch's official social media page, Charles can be seen enjoying a stroll before meeting Alice and wishing her a happy birthday.

His Majesty, 75, was heard saying “Congratulations” before the pair shook hands. And judging by Alice's slightly shocked but nonetheless delighted reaction, their unexpected meeting was an absolute delight.

Charles' social media team added a caption that read: “The Royal gave Alice Ryce 'the surprise of a lifetime' when she bumped into him in the grounds of Dumfries House last week on her 87th birthday.”

It continues: “While touring the property, which is open to the public, Alice unexpectedly met His Majesty, who was delighted to share her special day with her.

“The King was in Ayrshire to support the work of the King's Foundation based at Dumfries House. Happy birthday, Alice!”

In the comments, fans of the royal family shared their thoughts. One wrote: “What a lovely surprise for Alice,” a second: “Probably the best birthday present ever!” and a third added: “A walk through the beautiful gardens and an unexpected, warm birthday greeting! A lovely day all round!”

Charles acquired Dumfries House in 2007 when he was Prince of Wales. Set in 2,000 acres of grounds, the residence features an impressive 18th-century house and an adventure playground.

Unlike other royal houses, the estate is not intended as a residence for Charles and his wife Queen Camilla – instead, it is used for various educational and training opportunities and is open to the public all year round.

Elsewhere in Scotland, King Charles and Queen Camilla own a private home, Birkhall, on the Balmoral estate.

The property was the setting for the couple's honeymoon after they married in 2005 and, more recently, it was Charles's sanctuary during much of the COVID-19 lockdown.

During an interview with Country lifeCharles said of the majestic garden: “It's a very special place, especially because my grandmother planted it. It's a garden from my childhood and I've actually only made it a little more beautiful.”
