Watch Kendall Eugene's Blind Audition on The Voice Season 26

One of the most exciting things about the blind auditions on The voice is the excitement of the selection process. Coaches have to make split-second decisions, singers have to impress four legends in just a few minutes and, of course, family members wonder if their star will be selected for a coach's team.

Unfortunately, these blind auditions sometimes do not end the way the singer dreamed, but thanks to a new feature on The voice This year, coaches have the opportunity to change that.

In the season 26 premiere, viewers met Kendall Eugene, a 37-year-old singer from Texas who grew up in a family of musicians, helped raise his younger brothers after his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and endured several setbacks on the road to his hoped-for musical fame.

“It's been an extremely long road to get here,” Eugene said. “I've experienced a lot of things in my life that have somehow held back my progress as a professional musician, and I feel like my time has finally come.”

To make the most of his time, Eugene chose a song by the former Agree candidate Morgan Wallen, “Don't Think Jesus,” which he hoped would help him achieve similar success to Wallen.

“It's so crazy. Just a few years ago, Morgan was here at The voicetrying to get his start,” Eugene said.

After finally choosing his song and his family watching, it was time for Kendall Eugene to take the stage.

When Eugene launched into “Don't Think Jesus,” it was clear that host Carson Daly and Eugene's father and brother were expecting the Queen of Country, Reba McEntire, to turn her chair. But McEntire waited and listened with the other coaches. Although you could see how they were feeling the music, the coaches didn't turn around, and the wait got longer and longer until Eugene finally finished his song without a single chair turning.

“It sucks because the choruses were believable and emotional,” coach Gwen Stefani explained when the song ended. “I didn't push it because even though I loved the softness of your voice, it needed a lot of fine-tuning in the beginning. I just think you should come back.”

New coach Michael Bublé expressed similar thoughts, saying that maybe it all had to do with the song selection.

“I honestly wonder if I would have turned my chair around if you had chosen a different song with a different range. Probably,” Bublé said.

New coach Snoop Dogg, meanwhile, explained that he didn't switch because he always expected McEntire to switch and he didn't want to compete with a country legend for a country artist. McEntire, for her part, was confused by her own indecision.

“I don’t understand why I didn’t turn around,” she said.

Then, when the reality of leaving The voice As Eugene began to realize that the mood had set early, McEntire announced that for the first time in the show's history, she would use the “Coach Replay” button (which allows a coach to select a contestant even after they've finished singing) and select Eugene as part of Team Reba.

“After the song ended, I felt kind of numb and knew in my heart that I wanted him on my team,” McEntire explained. “I'm so glad we have a coach replay button for the first time ever. It's the second chance for the coaches when we realize we missed that moment.”

The moment McEntire pressed play, Eugene burst into tears, and the moment became so emotional that even Snoop Dogg began to cry as he urged his fellow trainer to come on stage and hug Eugene. McEntire sealed that hug by saying, “I believe in you,” cementing Eugene's place as an early member of Team Reba.

“I feel like he has a lot more to show us and I can't wait to hear him sing again,” McEntire said.
