Hillsborough County seeks public input on school safety projects

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Hillsborough County wants to hear from you as it works to improve safety at five schools in the county. Each project examines the hazards children face on their way to school and presents a plan to eliminate those hazards.

The schools prioritized for the projects are Seffner Elementary, Thompson Elementary, Giunta Middle, Mann Middle and Lennard High School.

Abigail Flores of the county said, “We want parents from these communities to come and see what is planned for their communities, and we want feedback.”

Proposed improvements include bike lanes, new sidewalks, flashing lights and raised walkways.

“Raised crosswalks signal to the driver that he or she needs to slow down because the car is about to go over a bump. Also, the students are higher so they can be seen by drivers,” Flores said.

She said the ultimate goal is to slow drivers' speeds and create safer routes for children.
