Woman arrested for drunk driving after motorcyclist killed in crash on Highway 101

A woman was arrested for driving under the influence Monday night after causing a fatal crash in Del Norte County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At around 6:30 p.m., 52-year-old Shakiyla Bryant of Smith River turned her 2018 Jeep Wrangler from the Mouth of Smith River Road onto Highway 101 and ran directly into the path of a man on a 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, according to the CHP.

Officials said the 56-year-old Crescent City motorcyclist attempted to brake but was unable to avoid a collision with Bryant's Jeep. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the complexity of the accident, traffic was diverted from Highway 101 for approximately three hours.

According to the CHP, alcohol is suspected to be the factor. Bryant was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily harm, but the accident remains under investigation.
