Man charged with murder after human remains discovered in south Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Members of the Texas Anti-Gang Unit have made an arrest following the discovery of human remains in South Lubbock.

57-year-old Armando Champion is accused of murdering 54-year-old Elmo Minjarez Jr.

Detectives with the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit filed a missing person report on September 16 after receiving information that led them to believe Minjarez was in danger.

The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit, along with the Forensic Investigation Division, began a search and investigation in a rural area south of Lubbock on September 18.

Human remains were discovered during the search.

According to Lubbock police, investigators have found information that provides sufficient probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for Champion.

On Monday, Champion was taken into custody without incident by investigators from the Lubbock Texas Anti-Gang Center in the 1900 block of East 1st Street.

Champion is being held at the Lubbock County Detention Center on a charge of murder and is being held on $200,000 bail. The investigation is ongoing.
