Wakulla County politicians and residents are monitoring the path of a potential tropical system and preparing for possible impacts

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Officials in Wakulla County are keeping a close eye on a possible tropical system that could be heading their way.

Wakulla County Commissioners will hold a special emergency meeting Tuesday afternoon and the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office plans to open a sandbag filling station at the sheriff's office at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Wakulla County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jeffrey Yarbrough urged residents to take storm preparations seriously.

“Our message to everyone is that now is the time to prepare and plan,” Yarbrough told WCTV. “We don't really know what this storm is going to be or where it's going to impact, but we do know it's going to move quickly. So if people wait to make a decision or decide what to do, it could be too late.”

In St. Marks, some were preparing for the worst on Monday evening.

Brian Miller and his family loaded lawn chairs, grills and anything else that could be blown away from their home in St. Marks into a truck to take them to Tallahassee.

“We're nervous,” Miller said. “I think this is the biggest storm we've seen in recent memory. So we're preparing like we always do — we're expecting the worst and hoping it doesn't happen.”

Garry Schnaky, a longtime resident of St. Marks, said he plans to drive his RV to high ground and set up camp at a friend's house to wait out the storm.

“This is something that worries me a lot,” Schnaky said. “It could be a little rough.”
