Man accused of shooting at police officers now faces attempted murder charges in Portage County

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAW) – A 40-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man is expected to face attempted murder charges following a chase and shootout that spanned two counties.

Online court records show Clinton Mayotte faces additional charges in Portage County.

Mayotte has already been arraigned in Wood County. He remains in custody on $2 million bail.

The charges stem from a domestic dispute on August 20. At around 12:30 a.m., officers attempted to locate him after he disappeared from the scene. He was eventually spotted by officers in neighboring Portage County. Investigators said he did not stop when officers tried to pull him over. He is accused of firing a weapon and striking police vehicles. None of the officers were injured.

According to the original press release, his vehicle was disabled near 8th Street and East Grand Avenue in Wisconsin Rapids. Investigators said he continued firing at officers and fled the scene. A short time later, he was located by a drone on a rooftop in the area of 9th and Grape Street. Investigators said he fired at officers from there. Officers returned fire and he was arrested and taken to the hospital.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted with the incident, including the Portage and Wood County Sheriff's Offices, as well as the Grand Rapids, Nekoosa, Stevens Point and Marshfield police departments.

Mayotte is charged in Wood County with five counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and three other counts. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 10 to see if his case goes to trial.

Another court date in Portage County has not yet been set.
