Brevard man accused of shooting youth football coach faces trial – WFTV

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Brevard County man arrested for killing a youth football coach and shooting his brother appeared in court Tuesday.

Melbourne police said Andrew Guzman shot Devon and Michael Lakes at Eddie Lee Taylor Park on Saturday.

Devin Lakes later died in hospital.

According to a police report, a large crowd had gathered at the park to watch a youth soccer game, and another crowd was in the park after leaving Craig Dewberry's funeral.

Dewberry was shot at the Tip Top Mini-Mart, not far from the park.

Devin Lakes, a youth soccer coach, was leaving the complex with his brother on Saturday night when both men were shot.

Shortly before the shooting, there was an argument between Guzman and the coach's brother, the police report says.

A family member told police that there had been problems between the two in the past because of a woman they both knew.

The coach decided to go out behind his brother to make sure he got out safely.

According to police, Devin Lakes succumbed to his injuries and his brother was seriously injured.

Guzman, 30, is charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of weapons as a convicted felon.

Guzman is being held without bail in the Brevard County Jail.

The Organizers for Lakes team posted a letter to parents on Facebook, stating that the safety of our children remains our top priority and adding that their thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragic event.

A memorial for Lakes made up of flowers, candles and photographs has been created at the Eddie Lee Taylor Community Complex.
