Cyclist dies after accident with SUV on Memorial Drive in Cambridge

A bicyclist died in a crash on Memorial Drive in Cambridge near the Boston University Boathouse on Monday evening. The crash occurred just before 6 p.m. Monday in the 600 block of Memorial Drive and prompted a response from both Cambridge police and Massachusetts State Police. According to a preliminary investigation, a man in his 20s lost control of his vehicle and struck the bicyclist. The victim was identified as 62-year-old John Corcoran of Newton. Corcoran suffered serious injuries and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Photos from the scene of the crash show significant damage to the windshield of a black SUV that remained at the scene while investigators collected evidence. The bicyclist's belongings, including a heavily damaged bicycle, were scattered across the busy roadway. The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Division and Crime Scene Services Division arrived at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Middlesex Division of Criminal Investigation. Authorities have not filed charges.
