Community walk in Rodgers Forge after recent incidents

Residents of Rodgers Forge in Baltimore County gathered for a community march in solidarity on Tuesday. The march came after a man was hospitalized following an attempted robbery and shooting. The incident occurred Sept. 13 near Dunkirk and Hopkins roads. Sarah Fogarty, a resident of Rodgers Forge, shared her thoughts on the harrowing event. “Obviously there's violence everywhere and things happen, but this was really shocking and disturbing for everyone here,” Fogarty said. The march was organized by Baltimore County Councilman Mike Ertel, D-District 6, who represents the district. Ertel stressed the importance of sticking together during difficult times. He said the victim, Mark McKenzie, was involved in the community. “The person who was shot is a recreational coach. He's a pillar of the community. And it hurts,” Ertel said. Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough also attended the event. “We are in the process of identifying suspects. So we have persons of interest and we are working on the investigation,” McCullough said. McCullough also said police presence in the area has been significantly increased with foot and bike patrols and additional crime officers. Fogarty expressed hope that the community march is a step toward preventing further crime in the area. “I think it's just great to bring an entire neighborhood together on such a disturbing event, just for us all to go and talk to police and come together to really bring awareness to what happened in the neighborhood,” Fogarty said. A GoFundMe page has been set up in his honor and has already raised more than $123,000. Matthew Garrity, the organizer of the page, posted an update saying McKenzie's condition is stable.
