State Highway Patrol investigates fatal crash on Highway 86 north of Hillsborough

According to police, an accident north of the Hillsborough city limits on Tuesday evening resulted in one death and a road closure that lasted for hours.

An alert sent out around 5:50 p.m. by the Orange County Sheriff's Office said both lanes of North Carolina Highway 86 would be closed for “an extended period of time” while the North Carolina Highway Patrol investigated a crash. While the initial alert did not specify where the crash occurred, real-time traffic maps showed congestion and a closure on the stretch near residential streets such as Split Rail Lane, Midway Drive and Old Pleasant Drive.

The state Highway Patrol later confirmed to media partners that “there were fatalities” in the single-vehicle crash. No further information had been released publicly as of Tuesday evening.

According to the Highway Patrol, Highway 86 near Coleman Loop Road reopened to traffic before 8 p.m., ending a detour that had largely rerouted motorists via Coleman Loop Road or to Highway 57 North.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is responsible for investigations along highways and interstates, including crimes and serious accidents. The Orange County Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday that its job is to assist with security around the accident scene and traffic control.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
