For the first time in 11 years, the Birmingham Barons are back at the top of the Southern League.

Birmingham secured the title on Tuesday night by sweeping the Montgomery Biscuits with a 2-1 victory in 10 innings.

Read on to learn more about the Barons' championship and see some sights from the final game of the year at Regions Field.

Barons 2, Cookies 1

In the first game, Birmingham went on the road and picked up a 7-2 victory at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery on Sunday afternoon. This result gave the Barons a chance to win the championship in front of their home fans.

Officially it was a three-game series, but the Barons didn't miss their first chance.

Birmingham scored in the first inning when an RBI single by catcher Michael Turner brought in Rikuu Nashida. That seemed to be all the Barons needed, but Montgomery forced extra innings with an RBI by Chandler Simpson in the ninth.

But in the 10th inning, DJ Gladney hit a single to center field, bringing in Shawn Goosenberg. That run brought the walkoff victory and sent the home crowd into ecstasy.

First championship since 2013

Birmingham's last title came in 2013, the same year Regions Field opened, and it was the last time the Barons appeared in a playoff. This was also the last time an Alabama team won the Southern League.

The Barons now have eight Southern League championships to their name.
