MPD officer accused of shooting dog in Highland Heights

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphis police are investigating the death of a dog that killed one of their officers.

An officer is suspected of shooting a dog on Beatrice Street between National Street and Highland Street around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

We are not sure if MPD was already on site or was called to the scene when this occurred.

Memphis Animal Services was also called to the scene of the accident.

A neighbor who lives in the area says she has seen the dog before and is confused why the MPD had to shoot the dog.

“I'm very supportive of the police and all that, but the response seemed very cold,” Kadie Steele said. “It seemed like nothing was being done. She asked if anyone could help. I asked if we could go to a vet and one of the officers said an ambulance was going to check the dog. I said really because that seemed really far-fetched. So I asked if that was just lip service or if they were really going to help the dog.”

Here too, we do not know the circumstances that led to the shooting.

We are waiting for the police's response.
