Sandy Ryan vs. Mikaela Mayer Preliminary Fights: Complete List of Fights Before the Main Event in Boxing 2024

Mikaela Mayer is fresh off the mark and hoping for more gold when she challenges Sandy Ryan for the WBO welterweight title on Friday, September 27. The fight at Madison Square Garden's Hulu Theater will be broadcast in the US on ESPN+.

Ryan (7-1-1) defeated Marie Pier Houle for the WBO title in April 2023. After a controversial draw with Jessica McCaskill to determine the undisputed champion, in which Ryan appeared to be the clear winner, she rebounded by defeating Terri Harper.

Mayer (19-2), a U.S. Olympian, is a former IBF and WBO super featherweight champion, losing the belts to rival Alycia Baumgardner. After a run at lightweight, Mayer lost to Natasha Jonas for the IBF welterweight title in January. It will be her first fight in the U.S. since 2022.

Outside of the title fight, there is tension between the two fighters. Mayer left her gym after it was announced that Kay Koroma would be training Ryan for the fight. The two respect each other's talents, and Mayer will put personal issues aside and focus on Ryan's overall skills.

“I knew I was going to face the champions in the 147-pound division and Sandy is one of those champions. … If I thought Sandy was a chump, I wouldn't chase her, I wouldn't challenge her, I wouldn't bother trying to win that fight. I certainly respect her. She's talented, she's at the peak of her career right now,” Mayer told Sky Sports.

“I am not a [Jessica] McCaskill, and I'm no Terri Harper. I know 100 percent, and she knows too, that I'm her toughest fight yet.”
