Father arrested for drunk driving at the scene of his son's accident

The Coos County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) reports that a 24-year-old man was flown out by helicopter after a rollover car crash on Tuesday. They also report that his father was arrested at the scene for drunk driving.

On September 24, 2024, at approximately 7:01 p.m., the CCSO received a report of a motor vehicle accident at mile marker 3.5 on Sitkum Lane in Myrtle Point.

According to CCSO, several officers responded to the scene of the accident and the driver was identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Crabill, who had left a local bar prior to the accident.

“It appears that alcohol may have played a role in the accident. Benjamin was removed from the car and flown to an out-of-area hospital for treatment,” the CCSO tells us.

According to the CCSO, Benjamin Crabill's father, 53-year-old Jonathan Crabill, arrived at the scene in his own vehicle. An officer noticed that Jonathan smelled of alcohol and was not cooperating with police.

Deputies administered a standardized sobriety test to Jonathan Crabilla. After the test, Jonathan was arrested for:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs

He was taken to the Coos County Jail, where he continued to be uncooperative, according to CCSO.

According to CCSO, officers requested a search warrant to test Jonathan's blood for alcohol content and also issued a summons for:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs
  • No breath sample required

The investigation into Benjamin Crabill’s accident is still ongoing.
