City of Tucson clears Santa Rita Park on Wednesday morning

TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – Sources and online postings say the City of Tucson plans to close Santa Rita Park Wednesday morning as part of a years-long improvement project.

In a memo obtained by KGUN9, the closure is referred to as a “shutdown.”

The city has not issued any urgent warnings about this specific plan, although flyers have been distributed throughout the park.

It states, among other things: “This area requires cleanup to protect the public health, safety, or welfare in a City of Tucson park. You are hereby notified to remove all of your personal belongings and vacate the property. This park will be closed for cleanup beginning at 8:00 a.m. on September 25, 2024.”

In 2018, the city approved what is known as Prop 407, essentially a $225 million bond. Of that money, the city allocated $3 million to renovate Santa Rita Park, which includes upgrading the bathrooms and the now-abandoned pool.

We will continue to keep you updated on the situation online and on air throughout the day.
