Police arrest suspect after fatal street racing accident

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Police arrested a suspect Tuesday accused of causing a fatal crash during a street race in northwest Albuquerque.

On August 18, officers responded to a reported two-vehicle crash at the corner of Central Avenue and 47th Street around 2:30 a.m. Two people were rescued from a black truck while another person was still trapped in a black sedan.

The black truck was street racing another vehicle heading east on Central. The black truck then lost control, crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with the black sedan.

The driver of the black sedan was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident after rescue workers lifted the truck off the sedan. Paramedics took the two men in the black truck to the hospital.

Investigators say they received video footage from the Real Time Crime Center and several nearby businesses showing the incident.

Police identified the driver as Edgar Silva, who suffered serious injuries. They took Silva into custody Tuesday. He is charged with vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving.

Investigators are awaiting test results to determine whether alcohol consumption contributed to the accident.
