Man arrested for murder after fatal shooting on Dayton Street

Tyler Nelson, 30, was arrested following a shooting Tuesday morning in the 600 block of South Dayton Street.

DENVER – A man is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman in her Denver apartment early Tuesday morning.

According to Denver Police, Tyler Nelson, 30, called 911 shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday to report a shooting at his apartment in the 600 block of South Dayton Street in east Denver.

When police arrived, they found a woman on the master bedroom floor with an apparent gunshot wound, according to a Denver Police probable cause statement for Nelson's arrest. The document also shows a shotgun leaning against an open closet with the muzzle pointing up.

Nelson agreed to speak with officers, but most of what he told them was redacted from the PC statement. The statement indicates that the victim's wound did not appear to match Nelson's explanation that she had been shot. A preliminary examination of the crime scene also did not match his explanation of what happened, the PC statement said.

Investigators noted that Nelson never asked about the victim's condition and did not appear to show any emotion about what happened, but he was upset when he was told the victim had died from his injuries, the affidavit states.

Police believe Nelson and the victim had a verbal argument shortly before the shooting. Her name will be released at a later date by the Denver Medical Examiner's Office.
