The Milan C-2 School District has responded to an incident involving inappropriate conduct by a Marceline fan at a Junior High and Junior Varsity football game held at The Pit on September 23.

In a letter posted on the district's Facebook page, Superintendent Dr. Ashley Pauley addressed the situation, explaining that administrators on duty at the game became aware of the Marceline visitor's behavior. The individual in question was behaving inappropriately, which prompted Milan's team to act quickly and contact Marceline's on-duty representative to deescalate the situation and have the visitor removed. Milan administrators also contacted local law enforcement as a precaution in the event the individual refused to leave the premises. Pauley clarified that administration was unaware of the presence of a weapon at the time.

In her statement, Dr. Pauley emphasized the importance of having fans present at the Milan C-2 events and urged attendees to set a positive example for students. She encouraged anyone who observes concerning behavior at a school event to report it to administration immediately. Pauley emphasized that the safety of students, staff and fans at home and away events remains the district's top priority. She also thanked local law enforcement for their quick response and appropriate handling of the situation.

Following the incident, 42-year-old Jeko Petar Markov was charged with multiple felonies and one misdemeanor. Those charges include unlawful use of a weapon by bringing a loaded weapon into a school, bus, property or event, unlawful use of a weapon while under the influence of alcohol with a loaded firearm, and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Markov is also charged with a misdemeanor of driving under the influence of alcohol with a person under the age of 17 in the vehicle. His bail was set at $25,000 cash only.
