Live updates: Election news on Donald Trump and Kamala Harris

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal called for new leadership of the Secret Service and said the responsibility definitely lies with the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

His comments follow a new bipartisan Senate report detailing leadership failures at the agency following the first assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

“The responsibility clearly lies with the head of the agency, the Department of Homeland Security, Alexander Mayorkas. He must come clean, replace the leadership and provide full disclosure that the department has so far blocked,” Blumenthal told CNN.

Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat who is leading the subcommittee's investigation, said there was a clear lack of leadership and that the Secret Service's top leadership needed to be replaced.

Meanwhile, Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Gary Peters, a Democrat from Michigan, and Senate Ranking Member Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, also pointed out that the Secret Service bore no responsibility in the report.

“We had bipartisan, unanimous agreement that the assassination could have been prevented, that there were numerous mistakes made by the Secret Service and that things must get better,” Paul told reporters Wednesday morning.

Paul called for layoffs within the agency, arguing that the increased funding for the Secret Service included in the federal funding extension would not solve the problem. Peters, on the other hand, said layoffs should be delayed until more information is available.

The Chairman also pointed out that this was an interim report – and stressed that a full report would follow later.
