Steps to follow after a hit-and-run accident in Chico, CA

There are certain steps you can take to protect your rights to compensation after an unfortunate hit-and-run accident. Not only can they help the authorities arrest the driver, but they can also support your claim for fair compensation. These measures include:

  1. Collect as much information as possible at the scene of the accident. Try to note the license plate number of the car that hit you or your vehicle, as well as the make, model and color. If possible, take a few photos of the car involved. All of this can help quickly identify and subsequently locate the vehicle involved in your case.
  2. Contact the authorities as soon as possibleThe sooner you notify the police about the accident, the sooner they can arrest the motorist. In addition, contacting the police will create an official accident report. Within a few days, you can request an accident report from either the police station that handled the accident or the California DMV. This document will help you later when filing a claim.
  3. Obtain the names and contact details of anyone who may have witnessed the incident. It is important to remember that people who see an accident may stay to make sure you are OK, but when the police and ambulance arrive they may drive away immediately. It is important to get their names and phone numbers immediately. Witnesses can have a significant impact in such cases. For example, a witness could confirm that the other vehicle hit your car, and not the other way around.
  4. Seek medical attention immediately. For your own well-being, you should see a doctor as soon as possible and have your injuries examined. Following the treatment plan recommended by your doctor is important on the road to full recovery. In addition, a doctor's visit will provide comprehensive documentation of your injuries, which will be useful for filing a claim.
  5. Notify your insurance carrier about the accident. While it is important to complete this task quickly, it is also important to make sure you focus only on the facts. Remember, you do not have to admit or assign guilt. In addition, it is advisable not to make a recorded statement or agree to a settlement until you have consulted with attorneys who specialize in hit-and-run accidents in California.
