Woman charged with manslaughter under the influence of alcohol after fatal accident

According to police, both drivers suffered serious injuries and one of their passengers died.

WOODBRIDGE, Virginia – A 21-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter in connection with a fatal head-on collision earlier this month in Woodbridge, Virginia. The crash left a 23-year-old passenger dead and another driver seriously injured.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 13 when Lesly Miraya-Mayuri of Springfield was allegedly driving her 2017 Toyota Camry the wrong way on Caton Hill Road near Killarney Drive. According to police, Miraya-Mayuri was traveling in the northbound lanes when her car collided with a 2015 Toyota Corolla driven by a 67-year-old woman from Woodbridge.

Neither Miraya-Mayuri nor her passenger, identified as 23-year-old Elvis Gabriel Alvarez of Alexandria, were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Alvarez was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the collision. Both drivers also sustained serious injuries and were taken to local hospitals.

After an investigation, authorities determined that Miraya-Mayuri was intoxicated at the time of the accident. On September 25, she was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter. She is currently being held on $10,000 bail with a court date set for October 9.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, whose name was not released, continues to recover from her injuries.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident or observed Miraya-Mayuri's driving behavior prior to the collision to contact investigators. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
