Mother accused of shooting her daughter made disturbing call from prison – NBC4 Washington

A Maryland woman accused of shooting her 13-year-old daughter was denied bail Wednesday, with prosecutors saying she made a disturbing phone call from jail earlier in the day.

Talecka Brown, 32, has been charged with attempted murder after she shot her daughter in the neck at their Seat Pleasant home Monday afternoon. Police said she shot her daughter in the neck at their Seat Pleasant home Monday afternoon.

Prosecutors said in court that Brown called the girl's father from jail on Wednesday and left him a voicemail message saying the case would be dropped if the daughter did not appear in court.

“At no point did she express concern about her child's well-being,” said Prince George's County Assistant District Attorney Ashley Sowls.

The judge ordered Brown held without bail after prosecutors said the call from the jail bolstered their argument that Brown could pressure the victim not to testify against her in the case.

A mother has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of her daughter in Prince George's County, Maryland, News4's Aimee Cho reports.

“Our concern is that it's her mother. She'll listen to her mother. We don't want her to be tainted in any way by the pressure,” Sowls said.

The 13-year-old was still in intensive care on Wednesday, recovering from the gunshot wound, but was able to walk around her hospital room. Doctors had feared that the girl might be paralyzed due to the gunshot wound.

“We know it will take some time for her to recover from her physical injuries, but her emotional injuries may stay with her for the rest of her life,” said Prince George's County District Attorney Aisha Braveboy.

“And although no one believes that a mother would shoot her own daughter – no one can imagine that –
Such incidents actually happen,” said Braveboy.

The girl told police that on Monday, when she returned home from school, she got into an argument with her mother, which turned physical.

After the argument, the girl began to walk down the stairs of the house when she heard a gunshot and fell to the ground at the bottom of the stairs. She was unable to move, charging documents say. Her mother then told her to say she had been shot by someone who had broken into the house, the girl told police.

Police are investigating the shooting of a 13-year-old in Seat Pleasant.

According to the police dispatch audio recording, Brown initially told police that her daughter had been shot by a homeless man and that she was already bleeding when she got home from school.

“They report that the patient was shot in the neck by a homeless man,” a dispatcher can be heard saying.

Charging documents say investigators smelled the smell of a firearm being fired in the house. When they asked Brown if there was a gun in the house, she said there was one in a safe that was unregistered and did not belong to her, according to police.

After questioning Brown, police arrested her and charged her with attempted first-degree murder and other charges. According to court documents, she gave conflicting statements during questioning with police and Brown eventually admitted that she was the only one home with her daughter at the time of the shooting.

Prince George's County Police are leading the investigation.
