Whole Foods customer can't believe it after store changes recipe of popular $5 treat: 'I just fell to my knees'

A recipe change to a popular Whole Foods product has set off alarm bells among disbelieving shoppers, who claim the store has “ruined everything.”

The $5 Berry Chantilly Cake was a popular treat among Whole Foods customers until a curious fan discovered it suddenly changing for the worse.

One online writer shared her frustration, showing viewers the cake she purchased for a flat rate of $5, which she described as being heavily altered from the original lush, fruit-filled recipe.

“It's just a little English teacake now,” she said, going on to describe that the new version has berries on the outside, is filled with jam in the middle of the sponge and is now “half the size of what it was before.”

According to online users, the cake is now filled with jam instead of fruit in the middle, doesn't taste the same as it used to and is only half the size it was before

“It tastes like a raspberry jam-flavored cleaning product,” she said after tasting the cake.

In another recent video, the creator commented that Whole Foods has made all sorts of changes to its products and stores that have caused disappointment among customers alike.

These include removing the rotisserie machines from sale, hiring the store's sushi chefs, and changing the mac and cheese recipe.

“We let them ruin everything!” she said.

One commenter wrote: “The way I audibly gasped.”

Another said, “I used to work at Whole Foods Bakery and ever since Amazon bought them it's been crazy. They freeze everything and it's more expensive.”

Another creator was equally disappointed.

Lisa, who usually posts about her law school experiences, called the change “criminal behavior.”

She goes on to say that the “worst news of my life” was when she learned about the product change.

The user says she used to get one piece every week, but then realized there were no more pieces available and was told it was because of the recipe change.

“He said, 'Oh, we actually changed the recipe, we don't do it like that anymore,'” she said, “'now they send it to us frozen, there's no fruit in the middle anymore,' and I thought, 'Why would they do that?'”

She continues: “Not only are they taking away the fruit, they are also increasing the price.”

Lisa, an online user, expressed her frustration in a video that the cake she bought “weekly” was now delivered frozen due to a recipe change.

Lisa also learned that the only original Chantilly cakes left were the whole cakes, so she bought one and planned to freeze the pieces, but found that the whole cake still didn't taste the same.

At the end of the video, she expresses her disappointment, saying she “thinks all of America is disappointed” and calls on Whole Foods to reverse its decision.

Commenters on both videos shared their own disappointment and expressed their love for the old version of the cake.

One said: “They threw away all the good stuff.”

Another tagged the Whole Foods account and wrote: “WHAT I AM UPSET @Whole Foods Market”

“NO, I GET THIS CAKE EVERY YEAR FOR MY BIRTHDAY,” commented another.

Whole Foods told the Daily Dot: “Until now, our program for selling Berry Chantilly cake slices has varied by store location.”

They continued: “We recently adjusted the flavor profile, size, packaging and price so that customers in each of our stores have the same high-quality experience – a delicious slice of cake with fresh fruit, berry compote, cream cheese mascarpone and fluffy vanilla cake layers.”
