Miles College buys Birmingham Southern campus months after closure

Months after closing for good, the Birmingham Southern College campus will soon be under new management. On Wednesday, Miles College officials announced that its board of trustees, along with that of BSC, had unanimously agreed to enter into a purchase agreement after the historic campus closed in May. “It is clear that institutions like Miles College continue to serve as powerful engines of economic growth and opportunity,” said Miles College President Bobbie Knight. “For generations, Miles College has been a cornerstone of progress in our community. This opportunity is an important next step in our vision to enhance our college, campus and community.” Miles had already signed a letter of intent to purchase the campus in June, shortly before Birmingham Southern seemingly rebuffed it by launching an international marketing campaign to find potential buyers for the campus. “We are very excited to take this next step with Miles College,” said President Daniel B. Coleman. “We were hoping to find a buyer whose mission aligns with BSC’s mission to educate young people for lives of service to others and in meaningful ways, and whose presence on the Hilltop will also benefit the surrounding communities that have been such good neighbors to BSC for more than 100 years.”With its roots in the Methodist tradition of service and its commitment to preparing young people for lives of leadership, Miles College fits that description. Months after closing its doors for good, the Birmingham Southern College campus will soon be under new management.

On Wednesday, Miles College officials announced that the Board of Trustees, along with the BSC Board of Trustees, had unanimously agreed to enter into a purchase agreement after the historic campus closed in May.

“It is clear that institutions like Miles College continue to serve as powerful engines of economic growth and opportunity,” said Bobbie Knight, president of Miles College. “For generations, Miles College has been a cornerstone of progress in our community. This opportunity is a significant next step in our vision to elevate our college, campus and community.”

Miles had already signed a letter of intent to purchase the campus in June, shortly before Birmingham Southern apparently rejected it and launched an international marketing campaign to find potential buyers for the campus.

“We are very excited to take this next step with Miles College,” said President Daniel B. Coleman. “We hoped to find a buyer whose mission aligns with BSC's mission to educate young people for lives of community service and significance, and whose presence on the Hilltop will also benefit the surrounding communities that have been such good neighbors to BSC for more than 100 years.”

“With its roots in the Methodist tradition of service and its commitment to preparing young people for lives of leadership, Miles College fits that description. We will continue to work diligently with President Bobbie Knight and her team to ensure a smooth process through to the completion of the sale.”

Once the sale is complete, BSC will work with the Alabama Attorney General's Office to develop a proposal for the college's endowment.

“We expect this process will take many months or even years, and we will be in touch with our foundation contacts as soon as we know more,” Coleman said.

The Birmingham Southern campus will remain closed to the public until further notice.
